Physics department conducts 1st water rocket competition

The department organized this event to attract the attention of students to the subject physics. The activity was done at club time this Friday, the most appropriate time in order to avoid schedule conflicts with other subjects.

There were various designs of rockets, with different themes  and colors, and despite the scorching heat, the students had fun watching their rockets fly, and were amused at some rockets which didn’t fly high, and some, which didn’t launch at all. They were all very enthusiastic and they cheered for their peers.

The winners were Almirah Marmar of III-Ruby, 1st place, Amen Jalil Calaca of I-Bernoulli, 2nd place , and Yehya Abuhajar of III-Emerald, 3rd place. Some of the high scoring contestants were also Paolo Aguas, Marie Anano, Reynaldo Luz and Royce Pacibe.

The prizes awarded were 50% discount for Cebu trip for the first place, 50% discount for the scouting trip for the 2nd place, and free lunch for two days for the third place. Free ice cream was also given to all the participants courtesy of Mr. Gokay, a physics teacher.

The judges were Mr. Ayhan Uluocak, a physics teacher and also the assistant director, and  Mr. Necmettin Bingol, a chemistry teacher. The criteria they used for judging was design, 15%, flight time,25%, Altitude, 35%, uniqueness, 15% and preparation, 10%.

“I was not expecting to win the competition so I didn’t do too much preparation. I just got a plain Pepsi bottle and designed it, and I expected that it won’t fly higher than the others, but it turned out well”, said Almirah Marmar, the winner of the water rocket competition.

“I think it helped a lot to make the students realize that they should give importance and appreciate physics because there are also students who think that it is a boring subject which is full of calculations, but in some ways, it is really interesting.” She added.

All in all, the activity was a success and surely the students would probably learn to appreciate physics better, and to be eager to learn more about it because of this event.
